There are a lot of great points in this essay, most of which I agree with. However, I do disagree with the assertion that Mr. Rochester viewed Jane solely as "a tool or instrument of his pleasure and escape". While she undoubtedly played a role as such, it's far more complicated than that (as relationships usually are). To say that Jane existed solely for the purpose of providing him an out negates the fact that Mr. Rochester genuinely loved her in spite of his circumstances rather than because of them. By that I mean that despite his unhappiness and misery he was still capable of falling in love and finding his equal. If Jane's sole purpose was to have been his escape from his dreadful marriage to Bertha, he would have written her off the minute she left and the story would have ended there.
