The Most Dangerous Game

There were times in “The Most Dangerous Game” when “The Hunt” was going on that I thought that Rainsford was going to get caught, and murdered. He comes close to being caught two or three times during “The Hunt".

For example, General Zaroff let Rainsford go out during the day, and Rainsford left a decoy trail for Zaroff to follow. After the trail was completed, Rainsford climbed a tree, and slept on a high, long, thick branch until the morning came when he found General Zaroff staring directly at the tree he was sleeping on. Luckily Zaroff did not see him, and Rainsford merely got away. Another example is when General Zaroff brought Ivan, his tall, menacingly big servant, and his hunting dogs to catch Rainsford. They were hot on his trail when Rainsford thought of an old native trick. He fastened his knife to a young sapling, pulled it over and tied it down with a weed. When Ivan stepped up to it, it struck him and killed him, but Zaroff continued his hunt, with Rainsford escaping yet again.

The final example is when Rainsford was running away; he stepped in this deep ooze. He found out that his foot was caught in quick-sand, and barely pulled it out with the general close behind. Rainsford quickly dug a deep hole and put sharp spear-like rods in the bottom. Rainsford we and hid behind a large tree when he was done, only later to hear that the general did not get caught in his trap, only one of his hunting dogs. Hence, Rainsford had gotten into some tricky situations while in “The Hunt” and just merely escaping them he manages to live and save his life.

Already read that story a few months ago. Good story yet there's no clear ending to what really happened to General Zaroff. I bet Rainsford killed him in order to save his own life.

Thanks for sharing btw.
