The Cellar by Richard Laymon

A review of master of horror Richard Laymon. Mr. Laymon and his dark side strike fear in a person again.

Richard Laymon the master of dark twisted humor. Made his debut with the book The Cellar, Trim in nature only roughly 250 pages. Mr. Laymon sold over 200,000 copies. Regrettably Laymon's second novel "The woods are Dark" plummeted in sales and from then on Laymon's success was elusive and for many years his novels went unpublished in his native U.S., as only the British publisher " Headline" dared print his novels. Part of that was due to the failure of his second novel but most credited it to the high amount of graphic violence, often versus women. After his premature death in 2001, U.S. horror "Leisure Horror" started publishing his novel's about every six months. Leisure has now published over a dozen of the 40 or more novels Laymon wrote before his passing.

The Cellar takes twists that one would not expect and will keep you reading. The Cellar is a grab your attention and do not put down book till your finished. It will also have you glancing over your shoulder for the story holds secrets, murder and mayhem and the biggest secret will be unfold in the diary.

Donna and her young daughter Sandy are on the run from Roy, Donna's ex-husband who was arrested for the heinous things he did to Sandy But in fleeing Roy, Donna and Sandy find themselves in Malcasa Point, home of Beast House, the legendary site of several brutal murders and now a thriving tourist attraction. Also in Malcasa Point is Jud, who has come with one of Beast House's survivors. He's come to kill the beast that lives in the house according to Larry (one of the two survivors) . Naturally, Jud and Donna are skeptical. Soon Jud and Donna will be forced to realize there is more one monster in Malcasa Point and not all monsters come in human form.

The Cellar takes so many unexpected twists you will have a hard time putting this book down. Towards the ending of the book you will be shocked at the major turn of events. I do not suggest this book for the faint the heart as it does have some twisted sexual content in the book. This is definitely not your horror book for tweens or even teens! It amazes me that Laymon was able to put so much into his characters in a novel with a short length of 250 pages.

If after reading The Cellar, pick up the sequel The Beast House, Coming soon is the third book to this series which will be do out by summer.
