The cask means container while the Amontillado is a kind of sherry wine. “The Cask of Amontillado” was conceptualized by Edgar Allan Poe while he was in his service at Castle Island. He became fascinated with the inscriptions of the gravestone on a monument outside the fort that he took it upon himself to know the story behind the inscriptions. The Cask of Amontillado is a story about Montresor's resentment towards his friend, Fortunado. It was said that Fortunado insulted him gravely so, Montresor vowed revenge. He planned a step-by-step way to murder his friend. First, was the invitation. Montresor invited his friend to go with him saying that he had an Amontillado wine at his place. Being a wine expert, Fortunado accepted the invitation. Second, was the conversation.
Montresor and Fortunado talked about things that ran about their lives while walking to Montresor's house. Third, was the intoxication. Montresor intoxicated Fortunado through alcoholic beverage; his plan was to get his friend very drunk. When Fortunado was too drunk to even think clearly, Montresor made him go to the catacomb first, telling Fortunado that the Amontillado was inside. No objections were seen because of Fortunado's trust to his friend. Then, Montresor chained up Fortunado and started to seal the opening of the catacomb. At first; Fortunado thought of it as a joke but as Montresor's deed went on he started to realize what was happening; Montresor was going to bury him alive. He pleaded for his life but Montresor, overcame by his anger took no notice and went on and on until finally, he completely sealed the catacomb as to where poor Fortunado lay chained and death soon to be his best friend.
