This book is about Matthew Freeman, but he calls himself Matt. Matt is 14 years old and thinks there is something different about him, and he is not wrong when he somehow foresees his parents' death.
He meets a boy called Kelvin at his school, who tells him about a warehouse with a lot of DVD's in it, so they go along and Kelvin ends up stabbing a Security Guard. Matt is then sent away to a foster home in a place called Lesser Malling as part of something called the LEAF project. The person who he is staying with is a nasty old lady called Mrs Deverill who uses him for slave labour, but he soon finds out about these things called the "Old Ones" who would destroy the world if they got let free, which would need the help of one of the five Gatekeepers. Matt is one of them. He then finds a man called Tom Burgess, who tries to help him but mysteriously dies, so Matt runs into Greater Malling and tries to tell his story to a Reporter called Richard Cole, who takes him as a joke, and Mrs Deverill brings him back home. When Matt uses a library search engine, a Scientist called Professor Dravid, who is part of an Organization called the Nexus. Matt is contacted and is asked to have a meeting, where he learns about the Old Ones and the Gatekeepers, before going back to his foster home. Mrs Deverill and the whole village turn out to be witches, and try to bring the Old Ones back by killing Matt. Matt uses his special powers to break free, and traps the Old Ones Back inside The Gate.
This is an excellent book and a fascinating read. 8 out of 10, and I recommend it for ages 10 to 20.
