Book Review- "what the Dead Know" by Laura Lippman

Including a link to the author's website and an excerpt.

The story starts innocently enough with a winter car accident. But when the women involved says that she is one of the sisters in a famous unsolved disappearance case over 30 years ago, everything changes.

Lippman conscientiously tells the stories of how the sister's disappearance changed the lives of the people that were affected by it at the time and their reactions to the final outcome of the story. Somehow she even makes the bad guys somewhat sympathetic.

Heather Bethany, the younger of the two girls that went missing on the Saturday before Easter in 1975, somehow just gives off a vibe that is a little to calculating for the detectives on the current case. But of course the people that have been in on the story from the beginning are little in shock over possibly knowing the final outcome. That is, if she is who she says she is…..

I really enjoyed the minute twists and turns of the story, it kept me reading and reading. I found myself saying just one more chapter and I will get up to do the dishes…Then just one more.

Lippman really developed her characters well. That was a tough job considering she had to paint them not only as they were in 1975, but currently when this whole thing enters their lives again.

Even when I was done, I wanted more. Not that the book was missing anything, I just didn't want to let go. If you like mystery and you would get a kick out of seeing the 70's again if only for a minute, check this book out!
