I think October Sky is relevant to today because of the social controversies in the book. The football players are a bunch of jocks, who get all the girls even if they aren't smart. But Sonny and his friends are outcasts. That is something that happens a lot in today's society. Many people are left out and ant to hang out with the cool kids. Except Sonny and his friends think that the football players are a bunch losers who don't know anything.
Another thing that is similar to today's society is that Sonny's dad was working most of the time and not home a lot. A lot of parents aren't home with their families a lot because they have to work to provide for their family. I know a friend who's dad works nightshift and he doesn't see him during the day because he sleeps during the day.
Sonny's dad often favors Jim because he is the oldest and plays football. That is the opposite compared to today. Usually it's the youngest one who gets pampered. I know from experience.
I liked reading about October Sky because it was about kids my age. I think this was the best book out of the three summer reading books. I enjoyed reading this book and I hope we will read more books like it.
