Book Review: The Renegade Writer

A must read for every aspiring freelance writer.

How many of you religiously follow every instruction on the writer's guideline? Do you believe that the SASE you sent to the publisher will not come back with a fat rejection? Well if you are the “living by the book of rules” writer but still have not found any success then The Renegade Writer is the right book for you.

Written by two successful freelance writers Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell, this book is “A totally Unconventional Guide to Freelance Writing Success”. Linda writes for Woman's Day, Family Circle, Writer's Digest and many other publications. Diana writes for Parenting, Family Circle, Fitness, The Writer and many other publications. Since the authors of this book have found success by breaking the rules and following the unconventional path, methods and way listed in the book are tried and tested. You can follow them to reach your goals as a freelance writer.

I borrowed The Renegade Writer from the library after one of those “I can't write anything that makes sense” days. Looking for a writing book to rejuvenate my creative side I came across this book which asks writers to break the rules and reach for their goals. While I am trying to follow the tips listed in the book, I believe that you will benefit from it too. So I have listed someone them here:

Break this: Start at the Bottom. Classic form of writers trying to hold themselves back. I have been doing this for years. All those big name magazines and trade publications are there for us but still we hold back, feeling a little intimidate and afraid of being rejected. Best way to deal with this, just send that query or that manuscript. What is the worse that can happen? Being rejected is not that bad, at least not as bad as not trying at all. Go ahead, break this rule.

The other tip which grabbed me was “Never Accept less that $1 per word”. Now for those of us writing for Associated Content know that this rule is meant to be broken. I sold my first article for AC for $3 and it had way more than three words. Yu have to start somewhere so don't let the money keep you back. After I started writing for AC I got some very good offers and I do not regret that $3 article.

The Renegade Writer is a valuable resource if you are just starting out as a freelance writer or if you feel stuck in your writing career. The book is published by Marion Street Press Inc. and retails for $14.95 in USA and $22.95 in Canada .
