Hillsboro, West Virginia.
She spent her youth in China,
in Chinkiang on the Yangtse
River. She learnedto speak
Chinese before she could speak
English. Her parents were
missionaries. Buck's father,
Absalom Sydenstricker, was a
humorless, scholarly man who
spent years trying to convert the
Chinese to Christianity. Buck's
life in China was not always
pleasant. When she was only a
child, the family was forced to
flee from forces of the Boxer
Rebellion.
