The People of Sparks is a post apocalyptic book written by Jeanne DuPrau. It was published in the year 2004 and it is the sequel to the book The City of Ember.
The story kicks off with the people of The City of Ember vacate the city. The people who used to reside in the dying city of Ember join the heroes Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow above the ground. The people of the city Ember wander for many days and finally end up being in the village of Sparks.
The village of Sparks is one of the few places where the human settlements have started after a big disaster. The leaders of the village are reluctant to accept the four hundred people who come in need of food and residence. The three leaders finally agree to accept the people and teach them how to live above ground for six months. They offer them housing and food in an abandoned hotel.
The people of the village and the people who came from Ember soon find that living styles of each other are very different and odd. The people came from Ember are surprised by the lack of electricity and other comforts they had in their place. They find difficulties in adjusting themselves to the sun light, animals and other things of nature.
But the people of the village don't believe that Emberites came from underground as it is impossible for them to believe that people can live underground. They are also not happy with the knowledge of Embrites about the world. Some of the residents of Sparks even attack some Embrites and Embrites face lot of hostility from many people of Sparks.
Tick Hassler, a young man who is argumentative in nature evokes many disputes between the two groups resulting in many attacks between the two groups. Lina goes to find her dream ancient city and is shocked when she finally discovers it burnt and abandoned. Her stay there results in her finding new facts about the Disaster which caused the destruction.
The conflicts between the two groups grow very much and the leaders of Sparks order Embrites to leave the village. But Embites refuse to vacate the village and a war is about to begin but then Doon saves a village child from the fire without thinking about his life. Lina comes and makes the two groups reconcile. They come to know that they were about to do the same thing which caused the Disaster and promise to live together without any conflicts.
It is a nice book to read and is innovative in many ways.
