James Patterson's Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment

A book review on one of James Patterson's best Young Adult Fiction Novels called Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment.

Characters

Maximum Ride (Max)

Max is the leader of the flock, and also the protector. She is 14 years old. It is her job to make sure everyone is safe from harm. She has a Voice in her head that speaks to her and tells her what she needs to do to save the world. Max mostly ignores the Voice though. She is a Human-Avian Hybrid, who is 98% human and 2% bird, just like the rest of the flock. She has a special trait which allows her to fly at speeds close to 250 mph.

Fang

Fang is pretty much second in command in taking care of the flock. He is always going on missions with Max, although he brings no-one else. Fang always acts like a stoic. He is also 14 years old, four months younger than Max. He has long dark hair.

Iggy

Iggy is tall and pale. He is six months younger than Max, but he is already a better cook than her. The most important thing is that he's blind. Even though he's blind, he can hack into computers easily. He likes to build bombs.

The Gasman (Gazzy)

Heavy-lidded eight-year-old Gazzy is named what he is because of all the gas he passes. It's a stomach problem that he had since he was born. He and Iggy are partners in crime. He and Iggy build bombs and other exploding objects usually as practical jokes. But later his bombs could come of use.

Summary

Alongside Max, Fang, Iggy, and the Gasman are Angel and Nudge. Angel could read minds. Nudge could find out the past of something by touching it. The main goal of the flock is to find their origins: if they had parents or if they were merely test-tube babies. And it is Max's job to help them.

The flock was created at a lab called the School. The scientists at the School harmed them extremely, to see their reactions. But their reactions were just like human beings, because they were mostly human. They were 98% human. Things were going very bad at the School until one scientist, Jeb Batchelder, rescued them and gave them a home. But he suddenly disappeared. But the flock learned how to get along on their own. Then the Erasers attacked.

Erasers were human-wolf hybrids that could transform at their will. They were made at the Schools as guards. They dropped out of nowhere and kidnapped Angel. The flock followed only to get themselves captured. At the School, they found Jeb, but it seemed like he was on the other side. The flock managed to escape the School by beating up Erasers. They found out from Angel that the scientists at the School were talking about some place called the Institute in New York. It might be able to tell them something about their origins. So the next stop is New York!

After flying to New York, the flock found the Institute along with coded information about their origins. They now knew that they had parents. They also found another Eraser attack.

The flock fled from New York heading towards the capital. But Fang got injured greatly and they had to go to a hospital. At the hospital they met Anne, an FBI agent who wanted to help. They had to go a real school. But the Erasers were always one step ahead of them. They ambushed the flock at Anne's house. When Max saw Jeb arguing with Anne, she went to find out the problem. She came to know that Anne was the head director of the School and not an FBI agent. She also found out about Itex. The company that wanted to blow up the world!

Max and the flock headed straight for Itex headquarters where Max got kidnapped. She managed to escape, finding out that Itex has created a fake Max to go with the flock instead of the real Max. But the flock was smarter than that and they figured out that she was a cheap fake. That's why Iggy and the Gasman built a bomb that blew up the entire Itex headquarters. The flock came separated, but left as a team.

Only Iggy ever managed to find his parents but they were traitors. They only liked his wings because they could make money off of them. That is why the rest of the flock never went looking for their parents, but did stick together, as a team, forever.

Opinion

The plot of Maximum Ride was completely unbelievable. It had a good plot, but the events could have never taken place. The only event that may have taken place is that Itex wants to blow up the world. Terrorist parties have tried this. The rest of the plot though, was too far-fetched to ever be true. For example, the main characters could fly. The enemies could transform into wolves. The School was a laboratory that creates hybrids of humans and other creatures. These parts were completely unbelievable. The whole story was based on these events. Flying humans, transforming wolves, and mad-scientists trying to make hybrids out of humans? I mean, how believable is that?!?
