To Kill a Mockingbird is all but a great book, but some people disagree and say that is should be banned in schools because of the racism in it.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee should not be a banned book in schools. To Kill a Mockingbird teaches a time in life where it was hard for a black man to live, and it shows the struggle of the African American lives during the 1930's. To Kill A Mockingbird does in fact use racial remarks but the racial remarks you hear in To Kill A Mockingbird is no different then you would hear on the radio or on the television. To Kill A Mockingbird teaches us the history we once had and the trouble of a African American which is why To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned. To Kill a Mockingbird relates to the Scottsboro trials in many different ways. The Scottsboro trial was related to the trial in To Kill a Mockingbird because black men back in that time was convicted just by the color of their skin. In the Scottsboro trial 9 black men were accused of raping 2 white women and the jury found the black men guilty just because the color of their skin makes them look guilty as the jury was all white. African Americans in the 1930's had an unfair society to live in. African American's not only had to do chores for the white folk but also had to be harassed by the white folk for the color of their skin. To Kill a Mockingbird was about an African American man named Tom Robinson who was on trial for raping a white woman when Tom was actually trying to help her. Mayella (The white woman) was a poor women that was looking for an excuse of her fathers abuse towards her, so she picked Tom to accuse. Tom being nice but also being black in the 1930's was found guilty and shot 19 times. The jury found Tom guilty because he was in fact black and the jury was all white.
To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because it teaches us a time in life where it was hard to be African American, and it shows the struggle of African Americans in the 1930's. When Tom goes to court for apposed rape on a white woman he was not only found guilty because of the color of the skin but he was found guilty how he looks in general. To Kill a Mockingbird does show us how racial that time point was and some people could possibly use these racial slurs but is To Kill a Mockingbird's racial aspect any different than what you would find on the internet or the radio? To Kill a Mockingbird in my opinion should be taught to improve our society and to stop the racism. To Kill a mockingbird is a good book and should not be banned just because of the racial aspect we see in it as you hear more racial slurs on television or the radio than you do in this book.
To Kill a Mockingbird shows historical connections between Scottsboro and Till because with Emmet Till whistled at a white woman in a racial white community and the Scottsboro trial 9 black men was guilty of raping 2 white prostitutes on a train. Till and the Scottsboro trial was both wrong because it was based on the color of their skin. If a white man whistles at a white woman nothing would happen to that white man but if a black man whistles at a white woman then he would be punished severely. Emmet gotten killed for his actions and so did the 9 black men, but all were harmless and convicted just as the color of their skin.
To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned from schools because it shows the history and hardship of the black community in some southern towns and what the African American's had to go through in the 1930's. The book also shows how racism played a part in the African American's lives and To Kill a Mockingbird as well shows connections to Emmet Till and the Scottsboro trials.

nice piece but i think it would be better if you added a little bit more information on the scottsboro case showing why they were incriminated by their skin like what evidence was used against them and what was used to defend them. I find it ironic that schools teach over and over again of civil rights and mlk and the slaves and the injustices of black communities faced but they ban books for displaying racism; and for teaching kids "why" times were so bad.

I think there are other issues than just the evident racism that contribute to the banning of this book. I understand it's been voted as one of the great books of the 20th century, but students can see the effects of racism, they can even read of these effects without being exposed to the hatred and language found in this book. Not every kid in the classroom listens to the music or watches the TV shows/movies that include the slurs found in this book. It his part of our history, but it can be passed down to the next generation in a different venue.
