Characterization
Soren the Barn Owl is very bright and intelligent. First, Soren proves to be very intelligent and brilliant when he figures out that he and his Elf Owl friend are being moon blinked. Also, Soren discovers there is only one way to prevent his friend from being moon blinked. To prevent his friend from being moon blinked, Soren and his friend Gylfie must tell the legends of Ga'Hoole to each other. The legends of Ga'Hoole are the tales the owls tell. Last, Soren figures out how to fly with a little help from Gimble the Boreal Owl. Soren is very bright and intelligent but he is also tremendously kind hearted.
One kind-hearted thing Soren did was he refrained from eating the snake since his house maid Mrs. Plithiver happened to be a snake. Another nice thing Soren did was he included everyone in his journey to the Great Ga'Hoole tree. Last, Soren told Gylfie that it was ok for him to fly away and leave him behind since Soren could not fly. Soren was kind-hearted by letting Gylfie escape. Soren is not only kind and thoughtful but he is also daring.
Soren is daring and courageous in many ways. First, Soren is particularly brave when he gets plucked and is told not to ask a question and still does ask questions. Also, Soren is heroic when he follows Gylfie's plan even though they could both get killed if the plan failed. Last, Soren escapes from the orphanage and tries to fly despite the fact that he doesn't know how to fly. Soren proves to be enormously daring and courageous.
Setting
First, the setting starts in Soren's quiet tree hollow in the Kingdome Forest of Tyto. Tyto is a large dense forest with many beautiful streams. Soren can see an unbelievable river from his nest called the River Hoole. The River Hoole runs all the way to the Sea of Hoolemere, which is where the Island of the Great Ga'Hoole Tree is located. This island is where the first owls lived. The Kingdom forest called Tyto is only one of the many settings in this interesting story.
Next, Soren gets snatched and is dropped into an awful place called St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls. The setting of St. Aegolius is a dreadful dark place where they hardly feed you a thing. For a long while Soren is unable to feel any wind because St. Aegolius is located in a deep canyon. In St. Aegolius there are massive repulsive bats that come out on a full moon. These bats suck the owl's blood right out of them which causes them to lose feathers. The setting of St. Aegolius Academy proves to be dark, bloodcurdling and dreadful.
At last, Soren arrives at the Desert of Kuneer, which is dry like most deserts with many cactuses. The Desert of Kuneer is the interesting home of the Elf Owls and many abandon animal burrows called the Burrowing Owls. The Desert of Kuneer is an important setting of the story since Soren is introduced to the small Elf Owls as well as the fascinating Burrowing Owls. Even though the Desert of Kuneer is dry and treeless this area is full of great excitement.
