The Series of Unfortunate Events is a series that follows the lives of three very unfortunate siblings, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire. Daniel Handler wrote this series of twelve books under the name, which most people know him as, Lemony Snicket.
Although these books were meant to be read by children, it seems to have been written by an adult readers mind. Most parts of the book would make more sense to an adult, also because some of the character names came from other fictional books such as Count Olaf. Count Olaf was a character from the book The Unauthorized Autobiography by Sally Sebald.
The three main characters, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, would be three of the most interesting people you would ever find in a life time and maybe even the richest since they have a fortune. They all have their own trait that would make them very unique. Violet, the eldest sibling was a very resourceful inventor. She would be able to invent something out of all the items that are around her even if those items seemed to serve no use, to that situation, to an average person.
Klaus, the middle sibling, was what we would call book smart. Before the Baudelaires house was burned down it use to have one of the biggest libraries out there. Klaus practically lives in that library. He reads day and night, book after book. Sometimes his parents would see him in there with a book in his hand, fast asleep, or even sometimes still awake reading.
Even with the mass amount of books he has read, he never seems to forget what he learns from them. He would be able to remember anything from groups of words he has read. This would prove that he has a great memory, as well as an interest in about every topic. Sunny, the youngest sibling, has the most indifferent talent of all. Consider that she still an infant we should think she would barely have any talents, but what she can do is bite. She has these four abnormally sharp teeth that would be able to pierce through anything. Everyday she would be chewing on anything that she could get a hold of, no matter what it was, as long as it was chewy and hard.
Although it seems to have no use, as you read the story of their lives you will think differently. In fact, all the talents that they posses helps them out in the series, as well as the fact that they are all well read, with the exception of Sunny of course considering that she is just a baby. With Violets quick thinking and impressing inventing skills she could spring the advantage back in their favor. In most situations in the book she is able to save the three of them. Klaus would also help because he is able to figure things out quickly and has a vast knowledge of things that would kill you. So with Klaus, you would be able to find out what to stay away from, or he could just tell you the cure for that certain dieses. Sunny, as useless as her talent sounds, would actually save them sometimes.
For example, by using her teeth to climb, or chewing off the rope tying them down. So each of them helps out in the story in each of the situation and if someone could not help they would just support. One other main character would be the nefarious Count Olaf. He is the usual person to blame in an unfortunate situation they are in. He would always try to find away to take at least one of the Baudelaires in order to take all their money. He would also do anything to get it, such as marry Violet even at her young age, or even take the live of another. But who could blame him. It is said that Count Olafs parents were killed by darts with poison tips, thought to be shot by the Baudelaires parents. So this could just be an act of revenge.
The story starts off with the most unfortunate mishap a child would come through. Their parents have perished in a fire while they were in the Briney Beach doing their own individual thing. After that it is all downhill from there, with very very few upsides. So the story usually goes up and down. Even if at times things would seem up for the children, something was always bound to happen right after that would just make things worse. One way I remember they would get in trouble is because of the fact that they were children. So since they were children most adults in the book would not believe them in what they say, or even listen to them.
All the older characters would always think that they were little childerent that know nothing, when in fact it seems as though they would have more knowledge then an average adult. They would just be there talking and talking trying to convince everyone whats happening, whats wrong, or if that person was just real Count Olaf in disguise. So it is very sad as a reader knowing that there was many countless times they could have been saved and in each book a new situation comes only leading to disappointment or even more and more questions.
These books are filled with many questions that always seem to pop up. The more you read them, the more questions you have. But in reading you try to find the answers to these questions, so you just keep reading. As you read these books your going to find many of the answers. I do not want to spoil the ending but in the end not all your questions will be answered. This is because when Handler was writing these books, he started from the middle of the lives of the Baudelaires. So the first book TheBadBeginning was not the beginning at all. It was just a chapter in the middle of their lives. So in addition to your questions now, there are more since what the twelve books have covered was not all of what really happened.
The last book, TheEnd, is not even the end at all. Well of course it is the end of Handler writing about the Baudelaires lives but if you think of it in a different sense there really is more to come. So as you can see, the author, in the beginning, told us you will read about bad things that would happen to there lives and what he said was true, it is usually a bad ending. But in the last book the unfortunate thing that happened did no happen to them but to us.
The unfortunate thing that happened was that our questions were not answered. We are left irritated with the author for not continuing the series because of that. So right now, if you read the books, you would just be left in the middle of the story, but in reality there is more to come.
