Louis Sachar's The Boy Who Lost His Face

A nice story for youngsters to read.

I read the book The Boy Who Lost His Face by Louis Sachar. It takes place somewhat in the middle of October or November in a town in USA. School is in session. It takes place in the school itself. There is not much that takes place anywhere else. The book has a life-like mood. It is about David's life and how he encounters some problems through his year at the middle school. His best friend Scott from the second grade became friends with cool kids and lost his friendship with David. This book is packed with some excitement, action, and some romance. What happened to David is not what you would expect a normal middle school kid to have, but it's the same idea (Boy tries to be cool, he fails, he meets girl, problems arise, and the problem get's solved, and he gets girl). But it is not only about love and problems. It is about a witch's curse!

The main Characters are David, Maureen (Mo), Larry, Ricky (David's brother), Randy, Scott & Rodger, and Tori. David is your average kid who has a lot of good in him but he wants to be cool, which he can only be if he does bad things with the cool kids. Mo is a raw, confident girl who can stand up to most of the boys until she get's hurt. She is David and Larry's friend. Larry is the new kid. He is always moving from place to place and has been to nearly every place in the entire world, or at least he says he has. Larry is friends with Mo and David. Ricky is David's brother. David is Ricky's role model. Ricky can't live without David. Unlike most siblings (think about sibling rivalry) he likes David a lot and often plays with him. Ricky likes David until he finds out about the crazy things David, Mo, and Larry are doing in school (they are called the three stooges). Randy, Scott & Rodger are the cool kids. Scott's friendship with David is over because it "hurts his reputation" to be around David, who's a stooge.

Randy and Rodger are already friends and are very mean to David and his friends. Tori is a "cute" girl that David likes but he doesn't know her first name (Tori) until Mo tells her midway into the book. David and Tori play this "game" that they talk very politely and in an orderly fashion. An example: “Good morning Miss Williams”, says David because he doesn't know her first name. “Hello Mr. Ballinger”, says Tori even though she knows his first name. “Fascinating weather we're having”, says David. “Yes, it is lovely is it not”, says Tori.

The plot is all about David's life in the school year and what strange things happened to him. David and Scott try to be friends with Rodger and Randy. Scott somehow manages to get in. So they go to Mrs. Bayfield's house. All she is, is a lonely old lady that the kids want to make fun of. The boys think she is a witch! Somebody told a rumor that Mrs. Bayfield took off her husbands face and put it on the wall. There were many other faces on the wall. Little did David know that one day his face would be hanging on the Bayfield wall. Rodger greets her at the door saying fake names for everyone except for David. While they pretend to be nice to her and have some lemonade, they are really planning to steal her cane. They steal her cane and run away, but David, who feels bad for her, is about to stay until she puts a curse on him. She says “Your doppelgänger will regurgitate on your soul! After the curse is put on David, he finds himself unable to do anything right.

His baseball breaks his parent's window, his fly is unzipped in Spanish, and his little brother hates him. All of this also happened to Mrs. Bayfield when they went to steal her cane. He also makes friends with the uncoolest kids in the school: Larry and Mo. All of this earns him the name "Curley" from the three stooges. When David finally goes back to Mrs. Bayfield, she asks him to return the cane his former friends took. David thinks of buying it off of Rodger. But he doesn't do that. He gets into a fight with Rodger. He brings everyone, Ricky (who now likes him again), Tori, Mo, and Larry. Rodger brings his crew, Randy, Scott, Alvin (who's another one of the cool kids), Glen (Rodger's brother) and himself. They fight for a long time, while Tori goes and sits down next to Randy, who she always, unintentionally, sat next to when she went to the movies or somewhere. While Randy is blushing and things like that, Tori takes the cane and Whack! Randy is down. “Shall we be off, Mr. Ballinger”, says Tori when she has the cane. When they return to the Bayfield estate, Mrs. Bayfield says how there was no curse, and she wasn't a witch.
