In my opinion, one of the main themes in Freak the Mighty is bravery. I think so because since Max isn't self-confident at all, it takes a lot of bravery for him to do the different things that happen in this story. Kevin is also very brave because although he isn't mentally disabled like Max, he has an unhealthy body. Although he knew that he would die in a young age, he acted like it didn't bother him at all.
The author makes his message clear to the reader by the characters' actions. None of the characters ever mention anything about bravery, nor does it say that they say it in any other way. As I said previously, Max shows his bravery by gaining confidence in him, although he always says that he's got no brain. The bravest part in this story is probably at the end, when Max writes Freak the Mighty after Kevin's death.
Since Kevin is obsessed with robots, which also made him obsessed with knights, he is into loyalty, bravery, oaths, and other knightly things. Therefore he probably learned to accept his fate and learn his life, even if it was a little short. Kevin's mom, the Fair Gwen, is also quite brave after Kevin dies. That is because she moves on with her life and gets a new boyfriend. Another person, which I think was brave, is Iggy Lee. That is because he tries to free Max from Killer Kane.
As you see, bravery takes a great part in this story. It is also connected to the knights, with whom Kevin is obsessed with, since they were brave and loyal too. The important message the author is trying to tell the reader through this story is that however different you are, you can always achieve anything you want if you don't give up. If there were no message at all, the author wouldn't have made Kevin die at the end.
