Brian's Hunt

The characters in “Brian's Hunt” are Brian Robeson and Susan (Kay-gwa-daush). Brian Robeson is 16 years old and lives in the Canadian wilderness because he hates the city due to its pollution, noise and all the fake people. He learned a lot of skills while being outdoors. Susan is around 16 years old, also. She lives in a Cree town, and Kay-gwa-daush is her Cree name.

I read the book, “Brian's Hunt”; it is the last book of the series of the Brian books. “Brian's Hunt” was written by Gary Paulsen, who is a very good author. Wendy Lamb Books published “Brian's Hunt” in December of 2003.

Brian loves to be by himself in the Canadian wilderness. He lives out there by himself with a few supplies to help him live. While Brian was canoeing one day, he heard a dog whimpering. He saw that the dog had a severe cut. It was easy to see that the dog was domesticated by how he listened to Brian. Brian was thinking that whatever harmed the dog must have harmed its' owners, too. So Brian started to head to the lake that his Cree friends were at to see if they were well. On the way there, he has to make extra food for the dog too. When Brian gets to the lake, it was quiet and there was no smoke or any evidence that anyone was living there.

He got up onto the shore, goes and looks into his Cree friend's cabin. He got his bow ready in case something happened. He walked in the cabin when he looked around there was slashes through everything. Something broke into it, but what? Brian didn't realize until a moment later that in one corner unto a sleeping bad was a bunch of flies. He went to investigate it and found Susan's dad's body sitting there. He realized what had gotten into the cabin, it was a bear.

Brian looked around to the back of the cabin, and found another body. The bear had also attacked Susan's mom. Brian looked around to the kennel where the dogs were, and found two more dog bodies. Then he saw a collar that was ripped up, but no body, Brian realized that that was the dog that he had found. Brian decided to look no longer and to bury the bodies. He made a small grave for each parent and dog.

Brian knew he had to look for Susan, so he got into his canoe and went to the other side of the lake. There he saw Susan, who hadn't slept for a day or two, because she was afraid of the bear, that it might have been following her. So they both got in the canoe and slept in the middle of the lake. When they woke up they went to shore where the cabin was and Susan used the transmission radio to call for help.

A day later a plane came to pick up Susan. Brian stayed behind because he had to go out and kill the bear that killed Susan's parents. Brian went and looked for it the following day. Brian went on a hunt. After the hunt the book ended.

One of the best parts of “Brian's Hunt” is after he finds Susan and she leaves to go live with her relatives in Winnipeg. After that Brian stays with the dog and has to go on a hunt for the bear. He knew well that the hunt could possibly cost him his life. Brian searched for the bear by following its footprints. After a while Brian realized he was going in a circle. He got his bow ready with an arrow and figured out he was being hunted. He heard the bear coming, so he was ready to shoot his arrow when the bear hit him and knocked him down. His bow and arrows left his hand as he as being attacked. Brian reached for an arrow and stabbed the bear, but it didn't kill the bear. He reached for another arrow, and stabbed the bear again. He then saw a big wall of fur crashing down on him. Next, he heard a whimpering which the dog was trying to get him from underneath the bear. Brian pushed the bear off of himself so that he could be freed. He looked at the bear and saw that the second arrow had killed the bear. He looked at himself, and saw that he had bite wounds but no tearing wounds. His shoulder was dislocated, and so he lifted up his arm and placed it back into place. He then looked at the bear again, and thought that it was only a dead bear. Killing the bear did not ease any pain for Susan. There was much work to do now to prepare the bear.

I would recommend this book to the people who like the Brian books because this is the last one of the series. Gary Paulsen does a good job describing details in the scenes, like “the hunt.” This book will keep readers guessing as to what will happen next. “Brian's Hunt” is a good book filled with excitement and suspense.
