Book Review: I Can’t Stop! A Story About Tourette Syndrome by Holly L. Niner

Here is a great book to read to children newly diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, as well as their siblings and peers.

This story is a simple introduction to Tourette Syndrome aimed at children aged 4 - 9 years. Clear, straightforward text and bright, expressive illustrations tell the story of a young boy called Nathan who is diagnosed with TS and learns to cope with tics in his daily life.

Nathan notices his body doing strange actions he can't control, and together he and his parents visit the doctor, describe TS to his school, explain to the other children why they shouldn't they taunt him, and develop strategies for Nathan to keep his tics under control.

The explanations are very simple, and emphasize the fact that tics are involuntary actions which can be easily managed if the right measures are taken; it's a very reassuring description of the syndrome, and if you've ever been through it yourself, you'll wish you'd had as easy a time as Nathan! It's a perfect book for parents to read to young siblings, classmates or children with newly diagnosed TS themselves.
