A Children's Book of Verse

A book recommendation of a beautifully illustrated book of poetry for adults and children to enjoy.

This is one of my favourite books sitting on my shelf; it is a pleasure to read to the children who visit my home and every visit they head straight for it asking for a poem.

It is a large, glossy hardback and a very well illustrated book that would make the perfect gift for the birth of a child. It is published by Brimax, Newmarket England.

The poems were selected by Marjorie Rogers; the selection is from the works of poets such as, John Clare, Robert Louis Stevenson, Thomas Hardy's delightful poem The Robin is included, as are On the Ning Nang Nong by Spike Milligan, and The Owl and the Pussy-Cat by Edward Lear.

The poems are not for the young to read themselves until they can understand the beauty of the poem, but for the child to be taken on an exciting adventure through poetry read by an adult.

The book is illustrated by Eric Kincaid, the drawings and colours are enchanting and exciting, he is a wonderful illustrator and captures the spirit of the poem on every turn of the page.

I loved a poem called Mr Nobody as a child and to my delight I found it in this book, the drawings bought my Mr Nobody alive for me.

Mr Nobody

By Anonymous

I know a funny little man,
As quiet as a mouse,
Who does the mischief that is done,
In everybody's house! …

I won't continue, find the poem in the book and enjoy!

This book will be on my shelf for eternity, I look forward to having Grandchildren to share it with. I recommend this book for folk of any age, and if you want the child in your life to learn beautiful classics in a way that boredom will not take over, this is the book to buy.

This was one of my favorite books also as a child. I memorized several of the peoms from reading them so often as a child and I still recall "The Swing" by Robert Louis Stevenson word for word!
"How do you like to go up in the air, up in the air so blue?"

I found this article through your blog and love it. I remember from when I was little there was nothing more exciting that going to visit someone who had something special I couldn't wait to ask for. In your case it is this book, I loved poetry when I was young and can imagine the anticipation of each little one that enters your home.

God bless,
Darlene
