Obviously, the circumstances he faced and the experiences he had in his life led to the emotional growth in Pip. We know that he was an innocent and timid little boy at the beginning of the novel.
This is one reason for the behavior of his sister towards him. As far as we know from the book, she always treated Pip in a bad manner. The major reason for her behavior can be said as the responsibility she was given after their parents' death. Because of these situations, Pip is a very understanding kid from his childhood itself.
Though his sister was mean to him, her husband, Joe was very kind and compassionate towards Pip. Joe was very close to Pip and he used to tell Pip that they were good friends at times. Pip might probably have got the kind nature he had from his brother-in-law. This made Pip to provide food to the escaped convict and by doing this, Pip saved the life of the convict. Not even once did Pip hesitate to provide food to a terrifying and cruel convict. Even the stone heartened convict felt very happy and moved by the gesture of the little boy.
After this, he was sent to Mrs. Havisham to work for her and he sees many sides of her. There he sees Estella, whom he likes at the very first sight. When she ridicules him about his shoes and attire, he feels very bad. Then he joins as an apprentice for Joe. Then a lawyer comes and tells him that some anonymous person was going to change Pip's life and he would make Pip a gentleman. He was asked to go to London. Though he was not so happy leaving his place, he goes in a hope that he would meet Estella there and show her that he was changed.
There he meets many people besides Estella. He makes friends with many people. After he becomes a 'gentleman', he rarely goes to his place and avoids meeting his friends at work. When Joe comes to meet him in London Pip feels uncomfortable. But after he left, he feels very sorry for his behavior and he feels remorseful.
One day the convict whom Pip has saved in his childhood comes to Pip and thanks him. Pip comes to know that the convict is actually his benefactor and not Mrs. Havisham, as he thought earlier. From then on he feels sorry for not treating his sister and brother in law good and a strong remorse builds up inside him. Then he decides to go back to his place so that he could be happy there. He returns to his place finally.
We see a lot of emotional growth of Pip in the book. The innocent guy starts to think of doing something in life. When he gets what he wanted, he turns mean towards his close people. Then he knows about the mistake and tries to correct it.
