Romeo and Juliet

In Romeo and Juliet, several people hold responsibility. Any one character can be blamed for the death of Romeo and Juliet. If one person's decision had been altered even a tiny bit, Rome and Juliet may have lived.

The following paragraphs look at four of the most likely suspects for their deaths. The four characters are Romeo, The Nurse, the Friar, and Capulet's servant. Though there are many suspects, these are some of the most likely.

[Romeo is responsible for the death of himself and Juliet. “Then plainly know my heart's dear love is set/ on the fair daughter of rich Capulet” (2, 3, 57). Romeo knows that he loves Juliet and that he will not go for anyone else. “Thus with a kiss, I die” (5, 3, 120). Romeo is responsible for his death because he kills himself. How much more obvious can it get?

Romeo's responsibility is shown because he was so emotional and stubborn.

The Nurse takes blame because of how she encouraged the marriage. “I think it is best you married with the county” (3, 5, 219). At first it seemed The Nurse wants Juliet to marry Romeo; it turns out she wants her to marry Paris. The nurse's betrayla led Juliet not to trust the nurse and get closer to suicide. “Romeo is banished and the entire world is nothing” (13, 5, 215). The Nurse wants Juliet not to be faithful to Romeo, and this lead them closer to death. The Nurse takes blame because she tried to make Juliet unfaithful to Romeo.

Friar Lawrence is to blame because he rushed into Romeo and Juliet's marriage. “In one respect, I'll thy assistant be” (2, 3, 90). The Friar agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet hastily without their parent's consent which leads to trouble. “Come, come with me and we will make short work,/ for by your leaves, you shall not stay alone” (2, 6, 35-36). Friar Lawrence is now happy about the marriage and going through with it way too quickly even though he knew it might not end up well. The Friar takes blame because he rushed into the marriage without telling th parents, and if he had been patient Romeo and Juliet would not have been married and then not died.

Capulet's servant is to blame because he could not read. “But i pray, Can you read anything you see?” (1, 2, 59). The slave shows his inability to read, and lets Romeo read the invitation. “If you be not of the house of Montague, I pray come and crush a cup of wine”(1, 2, 80-81). He comes right out and invites Romeo to the party. If he had not done this, Romeo and Juliet never would have met, and then this long sequence of events never would have happened. The servant definitely takes the blame because he could not read.

Out of the four characters examined, Romeo is most to blame, because he is directly responsible for both his and Juliet's deaths. Though the slave was responsible for Romeo and Juliet's meeting, Romeo would have killed himself anyway from being depressed from Rosaline.

The Nurse and the Friar would have never been involved if it was not for the servant. It all comes down to Romeo.
