Book banning in the popular novel My Brother Sam is Dead, by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier.
“Sometimes Father brought home Rivington's Gazette from Verplancks. It was a tory paper and he wasn't supposed to have it; it was illegal, so he kept it hidden.” In this passage from My Brother Sam is Dead, Tim is describing how his dad will hide illegal papers so he can read them to get news that may not be in the ruling governments favor.
I feel that people should always have the ability to learn and get a good education. Education is very important, especially in todays society where getting a job, going to college, and surviving well depends on it. I feel this way because everyone should have equal opportunities to do the same thing, which isn't always true now. If someone from a poor family wanted to be the president, they should have the same oppurtunities to go to college, study, and get a good job as a child from a wealthy family who wants to do the same. This is the way society should work, although it does not always work like that.
In the movie American History X, the main character, Danny Vinyard, isn't given much of an opportunity to succeed in life. At a young age his father was murdered and he got swept into the fate of white suppremecy. He obviously didn't have a very good oppurtunity to learn with all of this going on, and if he would have been more educated he would have probably went down a different path. Education is very important, and it is something everyone should have the opportunity to do.
