An overview of the main characters in the book, The Call of the Wild, written by by Jack London.

The Call of the Wild is a very touchy novel written by the famous American writer Jack London. The novel tells the story of a earlier domesticated dog which had to face some cruel situations afterward. The novel is one of the most read novel and a survey reported that it is one of the best books. The protagonist of the book is a previously pampered dog, Buck.

Main characters

Buck

As said earlier, Buck is the main protagonist of the novel. It is a 5 year old, 140 pound dog and it is a mix breed of Saint Bernard and Scotch Shepherd. This gives him Buck the appearance of an enormous and huge dog. Buck lives as a pet to Judge Miller and it is leading a very comfortable and very happy life. Judge Miller pampers him like a son and takes care of every need of Buck. Judge Miller and along with him, Buck live in the Santa Clara Valley of Northern California. They are leading a happy life until a day when things start going against Buck.

Manuel, Judge Miller's gardener's assistant kidnaps Buck and sells him to a person who trains sled dogs. He sells Buck for money. The sled dogs are in great demand because of the recent discovery of an yellow element. This discovery of the metal in the cold lands of Yukon is the main reason for the demand of sled dogs. Slowly Buck has to adapt himself to the cruel circumstances and the reality of his new life to survive.

He, along with other dogs, is trained to steal food, to pull sleds, and other things. He then finds himself in struggle with other dogs for the power and the trainers instantly see the cruelty and efficiency in Buck. He then becomes the leader of the sled dogs' team. Then he is sold to someone else.

He changes hands many times from then and finally lands at John Thornton's house. He is a very loving and caring owner who takes care of Buck very much. But he gets killed by Yeehat natives and in a fit of rage, Buck kills many members of the tribe.

Buck then returns to wild and thinks of leading a normal life there. But for him remembering the images of death and cruelty seems inevitable there.

Judge Miller is the first owner of Buck and he always takes care of Buck very much and he always keeps Buck happy with his caring nature.
