A book report on the thought provoking book by Gary Paulson.
A Meaningful Passage
“Though I ran sled dogs for close to ten years I did some twenty-two thousand miles with them, this book is not about sled dogs or running them. They were truly wonderful and I have written of them in other books. This book is about other dogs in my life and other times. I am, I say this with some pride and not a little wonder, a dog person. I make no excuses for unabashedly loving them, all of them, even some that have bitten me. I have always had dogs and will have dogs until I die. I have rescued dozens of dogs from pounds, always have five or six of them around me and cannot imagine living without dogs. They are wonderful and I think mandatory for decent human life.”
I choose this passage because I felt it explained what the book was about and how the author felt towards these experiences or in this case dogs. The examples from this passage that help explain my answers are how the author explains what the book is not about, it is not about his dog sledding career but his experience with other dogs. He also explains what an impact these dogs had in his life when he said he could not live without them.
Characterization
Gary Paulson has many traits but the two I choose were loving and tolerant. My example for the trait of love is when he met Dirk the street dog. After Dirt ran the bullies away for Gary he took Dirk home and feed him. My example for tolerant is when Gary Got Ceasar as soon as Ceasar sets foot into the house he became broken hearted. For several days he did not eat, Gary shows tolerance by allowing Ceasar to act this way.
If I Could Change
If I could change anything I would not change anything. I think this book is perfect and nothing should be taken out or added. I actually found this book very interesting. The plot of this story is perfect with the examples Gary gives. Gary loves dogs this is why I would not change anything.
Making Connections
“Once while driving to get a submarine sandwich I took my baseball cap off at a stop light and jokingly put it on Josh with the bill backward then I put a pair of sunglasses on him.” Although I do not drive I have dresses my dogs up before, well actually my mom dresses her up. My mom has a small dog named Cleo, she is a girl so my mom is always buying her stuff. She once put her in this little outfit and normally she does not like this but my mom was going somewhere with her so once she was dressed instead of biting at her clothes as usual she strutted around the house like a fashion model. This is how I can relate to this passage.
